Contractor Lockout/Tagout Procedure

1. Purpose

To protect employees, contractors, and equipment from injury or damage during servicing, maintenance, or repair by ensuring that all hazardous energy sources are properly isolated and controlled.

2. Scope

This procedure applies to all contractors performing work on equipment, machinery, or systems at Umarex / Walther.

3. Responsibilities

  • Contractor: Must follow this procedure and supply their own OSHA-compliant lockout/tagout equipment.

  • Host Company Representative: Will coordinate with the contractor to review energy sources, isolation points, and verify compliance.

4. Procedure Steps

  1. Preparation

    • Identify all energy sources (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, thermal, chemical, etc.).

    • Notify affected employees and the host representative before shutdown.

  2. Shutdown

    • Power down equipment following standard operating procedures.

  3. Isolation

    • Locate and operate all energy isolation devices (breakers, valves, disconnects, etc.).

  4. Lockout/Tagout Application

    • Each contractor shall apply their own lock(s) and tag(s).

    • Tags must display contractor’s name, company, and contact information.

  5. Release of Stored Energy

    • Safely release or block any residual/stored energy (bleed lines, discharge capacitors, block moving parts).

  6. Verification

    • Attempt to start equipment or test circuits to ensure energy isolation is complete.

    • Return controls to the off or neutral position after testing.

  7. Perform Work

    • Proceed only after lockout/tagout is verified.

  8. Restoring Equipment to Service

    • Inspect work area to confirm it is clear of tools and personnel.

    • Remove locks/tags (each contractor removes only their own).

    • Notify host representative and affected employees before re-energization.

5. Emergency Situations

If a contractor’s lock or tag must be removed and the contractor is unavailable, only the host company’s authorized personnel may do so, following the company’s emergency removal procedure.

6. Training & Compliance

  • Contractors must be trained in OSHA’s LOTO standard (29 CFR 1910.147).

  • Noncompliance may result in removal from the facility.
